2010 Defense Community Awards

1. Public Sector / Public Official of the Year
Who should apply? An individual whose outstanding leadership and commitment has been essential in supporting either active or realigning/closing bases and building partnerships between the military and community. Nominees shall be any elected or appointed federal (non-military), state, regional or local official, community leader, staff or a volunteer who has played a valuable role in the success of achieving the community’s goals of enhancing mission effectiveness through collaboration. Award Criteria Nominees for this category need not be current members of ADC but the nomination must be made by an ADC member. Demonstrates leadership in creating/or and sustaining effective efforts to develop partnerships with defense communities that enhances a local community and its economic development or the broader national community of defense communities. Mobilizes community support to build effective and sustained relationships with the military. 2. Base Redevelopment Leader of the Year (Active/Upsizing or Closing/Downsizing Base)
Who should apply? An individual from a closed or realigned base whose leadership efforts have been essential to the success of a base redevelopment project. Nominees for this award can be elected or appointed officials, community leaders, volunteers, or the chief executive officer of a local redevelopment authority (or equivalent organization) whose achievements and vision have served as the genesis for community economic development. Award Criteria Nominees for this category must be current members of ADC and the nomination must be made by a current ADC member. Demonstrate leadership qualities that enhance the success of a project. Provide management, direction and vision to build an effective and thriving community redevelopment effort. 3. Private Sector Leader of the Year
Who should apply? An individual from the private sector whose achievements have helped to further the goals of defense communities. Nominees need to be actively involved in defense community issues at any level. Award Criteria Nominees for this category must be current members of ADC and in a private sector position. The nomination must made by a current ADC member. Vision and leadership which has enhanced the tools and support available to active and/or closed communities. Provide leadership in promoting programs and policies that support defense communities. 4. Military Leader of the Year
Who should apply? An individual from any branch of the military whose outstanding leadership has been essential in building and sustaining partnerships with defense communities. Nominees can be active or civilian military personnel who have played a role in defense community issues at any level. Award Criteria Nominees for this category do not need to be members of ADC but the nomination must be made by an ADC member. Demonstrates outstanding efforts to develop, enhance, and sustain partnerships with defense communities whether acting or closing. Recognize the value of collaboration between the military communities and the private sector as an important component of military transformation. 1. Defense Installation of the Year
Who should apply? An active military installation (that has not terminated their military mission) from any branch of services whose efforts to build strong partnerships with the local community on issues such as housing, mission expansion, encroachment, schools or other critical issues is a model for all installations. Award Criteria Nominee needs to be the Military facility and the nomination must be made by a community representative and/or military representative that is a current member of ADC. Overall efforts to promote collaboration and partnership with the community and private sector. Efforts have led to measurable results in developing and enhancing partnership efforts of the base. 1. Active Base Community of the Year
Who should apply? An active defense community whose efforts in building partnerships with a military installation have enhanced military value and the overall economic development of the community. Nominees can be any local or regional organization that represents the communities surrounding a military installation. Award Criteria Nominee must be a community representative that is a current member of ADC and nominations must be made by a current ADC member. Community demonstrates sustained and effective strategies to promote collaboration with their military installation. Efforts to promote collaboration have led to measurable results in enhancing the mission effectiveness of the military installation. 2. Base Redevelopment Community of the Year (Realigning or Closing Base)
Who should apply? This award recognizes the overall efforts of a base redevelopment community and/or local redevelopment authority whose successful efforts to redevelop a former military installation is a model for closed base communities around the country. Award Criteria Nominee must have a community representative that is a current member of ADC and the nomination must be made by a current ADC member. Redevelopment project must be in the process of being implemented (i.e. not just a Reuse Plan has been adopted but construction has begun) or the redevelopment project shall have been completed within the last two (2) year. Redevelopment project reflects the community’s vision and the economic needs after base closure. Redevelopment plan’s progress has exhibited measurable results. 3. Most Innovative Community Project
Who should apply? This award recognizes an active or base redevelopment community who has launched a specific project/initiative of any size that represents a significant innovation or a new approach for dealing with an issue common to other defense communities, and that is a significant advancement to current best practices. Nominations may include but not need be limited to programs or projects such as applications of technology, environmental remediation, efforts to foster greater community participation, public/private partnerships, special outstanding building/construction projects, accommodation of affordable and work force housing, other environmental or conservation efforts (i.e., water and energy conservation, smart growth or sustainability initiatives, or recycling efforts that have lasting value) , land acquisition efforts, etc. Award Criteria Nominees for this category must have a community representative that is a current member of ADC and the nomination must be made by a current ADC member. Project must be in the process of being implemented (i.e. program is operational or construction has begun) or shall have been completed within the last two (2) years. Project demonstrates initial results and analysis and the correlating benefits which show a positive impact on such items as addressing a special need or community issue, creating efficiencies and/or cost savings, or resulting in significantly improved service delivery or operations. Project represents an emerging innovative model or new creative direction that is unique and could be implemented by other defense communities along with how the formula for success can be replicated, duplicated or applied to these communities. » Submit your nomination online |
1. Private Sector Partner of the Year (Company)
Who should apply? This “company of the year” award recognizes the overall efforts of a private sector company or organization in supporting defense communities and/or the military, including private developers who are implementing base projects. This award will be presented to a member company, organization, division or company team whose services have created a true partnership and exceed expectations of everyone involved. The company should have a commitment to defense community issues and be an active participant in ADC. Award Criteria Nominee must be a current member of ADC and the nomination must be made by an ADC member. Company must have exhibited a high quality of service that promotes partnership. Contribution and efforts have supported all defense communities. Company’s commitment to ADC and strong participation in the organization’s activities. » Submit your nomination online |
2. Private Sector Project of the Year
Who should apply? This “project or program award” recognizes a specific community initiative that has involved significant private sector involvement. This project must represent significant innovation or a new direction for the private sector community and a model for all. This award specifically recognizes projects/initiatives what have began, but may not be complete. Award Criteria Nominees for this category need not be a current ADC member but the nomination must be made by an ADC member. This award will be presented to the organization responsible for the project. Project must have be in the process of being implemented (i.e. construction underway) or has been completed within the last two (2) years. Recognizes efforts related to a specific project regardless of its completion status. Project represents significant innovation or a new model.
