AT&T to Update Tyndall AFB with 5G

January 28, 2020

Tyndall Air Force Base will soon become a “smart base of the future” after partnering with AT&T to update the installation with 5G capabilities, according to a Defensesystems.com report.

5G, the fifth-generation wireless technology for digital cellular networks, will provide a variety of military applications, including expedited data streaming to modernize flight-line operations, augmented security surveillance and analytics technology, and VR and AR applications for training exercises.

“The power of 5G has the potential to revolutionize and transform DOD operations, particularly on military bases, to significantly enhance mission readiness and enabling new mission capabilities like never before,” said Mike Leff, vice president for defense at AT&T Global Public Sector.

Tyndall Air Force Base was severely impacted by Hurricane Michael in 2018. DOD began testing 5G at several installations in December after calling for industry input to develop the technology.
