Coronavirus Stimulus Package Allows President to Extend Military Leader Appointments

In the $2.2 trillion coronavirus stimulus package released Wednesday, a subsection for defense and military personnel allocation stipulates President Donald Trump may extend the appointment of key service leadership positions.

The positions that are included in this legislation are: Chief of Army Reserve; Chief of Navy Reserve; Chief of Staff for the Air Force; Chief of Space Operations; Chief of the National Guards Bureau; and Director, Army National Guard and Director, Air National Guard.

According to a Senate Appropriations Committee summary, the legislation of Section 13007, “Enables the President to extend the appointment of several senior military officials whose appointments are scheduled to expire during COVID-19 crisis, ensuring continuity of senior military leadership.”
