Redstone Arsenal, Ala., was scheduled to reopen Tuesday, AL.com reported. It has been operating with about 25% of its 40,000-person workforce during the coronavirus pandemic.
The reopening is a “first step toward recovery,” Garrison Commander Col. Kelsey Smith said when announcing his decision last week during a Facebook town hall meeting.
The arsenal is the largest employee hub in north Alabama, with personnel from 16 counties in Alabama and Tennessee. COVID-19 diagnoses in those areas had declined over several days leading to Smith’s decision.
“I’m not saying we should all get excited,” he said. “We are far from through this.”
