Soldiers Work with Volunteers at Aberdeen Proving Ground to 3D Print Face Shields

May 13, 2020

Servicemembers from the 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives (CBRNE) are using their 3D printing capabilities to create face shields for donation to hospitals and workers around the nation.

“It just seemed like such a simple piece of plastic to help protect medical personnel,” said John James Arteche, command operations officer at CBRNE in an Army article. “But this simple piece of plastic can potentially save a life or mitigate risk.”

The grassroots effort is comprised of 50 volunteers, many of which are first responders, who assist in creating the personal protective equipment (PPE). The group expects to produce over 13,500 shields and distribute the PPE to 28 states and one U.S. territory.

“We do this one because we can, and two because we should,” said Gary Ledder, an Electronic Technician with U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (CCDC). “A lot of these volunteers were trying to help and it helps a lot of people mentally to help others. This gives me a purpose right now.”
