Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott (R-SC) wrote to Secretary of Defense Mark Esper on Monday suggesting the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) Headquarters should be relocated to Joint Base Charleston (JBC).
AFRICOM HQ is currently is based in Stuttgart, Germany.
“AFRICOM will require access to an established infrastructure network,” the senators wrote. Adding that JBC “offers direct airlift and sealift to Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti, as well as road and rail assets to provide a rapid response should immediate actions be required,” reports NBC2.
The senators wrote that JBC offers a diverse range of options for housing, educational opportunities, and spousal employment. Furthermore they said that JBC would offer “cost saving opportunities,” as well as a “lower cost of living” for personnel and their dependents.
