In an upcoming ceremony this Wednesday featuring Vice President Mike Pence, the U.S. Air Force plans to rename two Florida installations involved in Space Force operations, Defense One reports.
Officials say Cape Canaveral Air Force Station will be renamed Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Patrick Air Force Base will be renamed Patrick Space Force Base.
The ceremony is a commemoration by the Trump Administration marking U.S. Space Force’s one year anniversary.
Defense One reports that name changes “violate a gentleman’s agreement” between military officials and congressional staffers who asked the service to hold off renaming any bases until after the FY2021 National Defense Authorization Act was passed.
Other officials expected to attend the ceremony include Deputy Defense Secretary David Norquist; Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett; Gen. Jay Raymond, the chief of space operations; and Gen. C.Q. Brown, the Air Force chief of staff.
Earlier in the year Gen. Raymond said the service would postpone renaming ceremonies due to COVID-19 cases spiking around the nation.
