The 8th Air Force Historical Society is conducting a nationwide essay contest about the 8th Air Force’s service during World War II and beyond.

It’s a way “to help educate our youth on such an important time in the history of our nation and the entire world,” Retired Brig. Gen. Paul W. Tibbets IV, a member of the organization’s board of directors, told ADC. “Those that served during this period defined who we are today.”

The 8th Air Force started in Savannah, Georgia and is now headquartered at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana.

The historical society develops curricula to help educators at all grade levels incorporate the essay contest into Veterans Day lessons and activities.

Some of the selected essayists will receive scholarships, be published in the society’s magazine or be featured at the 8th Air Force’s 2022 reunion.
