House to Vote Tuesday on Stopgap Bill with Storm Aid, Debt Ceiling Suspension

September 21, 2021

House Democratic leaders plan to bring a bill to the floor Tuesday that would keep the federal government running into December. By Monday night, House leaders were planning to add federal disaster aid and a suspension of the debt ceiling through December 2022.

Moving the three items together would set up a showdown with Senate Republicans who say Democrats should raise the debt ceiling without Republican votes, but some of whom may be tempted to vote for hurricane damage aid and a continuing resolution.

If President Joe Biden doesn’t sign a continuing resolution this month, most of the federal government would shut down Oct. 1.
