Army’s New Climate Strategy Reimagines Installation Energy

All Army installations will have 100% carbon pollution-free electricity by 2030, and each will have a microgrid in place by 2035, under the service’s new climate strategy. Installations would transition to an all-electric non-tactical vehicle fleet by 2035.

“The Army will mitigate and adapt to climate change, and in doing so gain a strategic advantage, especially as we continue to outpace our near-peer competitors,” Army Secretary Christine Wormuth wrote in an introduction to the United States Army Climate Strategy, released Tuesday.

The document lists Installations as its first line of effort.

“Because of the systems and people they host, the communities they connect with, and the spaces they safeguard, installations anchor and guide some of the Army’s most consequential efforts to improve itself while responding to climate change,” it says.

The strategy also outlines the Army’s mitigation strategies, including training soldiers to handle harsher environments.
