Dwight Eisenhower, Colin Powell and Harriet Tubman are among the names DOD’s Naming Commission included on a list of names it is now considering for Army installations currently named after Confederate leaders. The commission, established by Congress in 2021, created the list of 87 names from more than 34,000 public submissions.
“The names of our military installations should appropriately reflect the courage, values and sacrifices of our diverse military men and women, with consideration given to the local or regional significance of names and their potential to inspire and motivate our service members,” the commission said on its website.
Commissioners said they will now engage with installations leaders, personnel and local communities to finalize names.
Rep. Anthony Brown (D-Md.), who pushed for legislation establishing the commission, praised the recommendations.
“The list of potential new names for these installations reflects the rich diversity of our military’s history, recognizing men and women who have upheld our shared values and fought to preserve and protect our union,” Brown said in a statement.
