The Alaska National Guard and the Army Corps of Engineers are working to turn small former Guard parcels into affordable housing and community facilities, according to a DOD story. “Through collaborative efforts with National Guard Bureau and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, we are pleased to be repurposing excess rural facilities for continued use in public service,” said Kevin Vakalis, realty officer for the Alaska Army National Guard. “The logistics of rural Alaska are a driving factor in the higher costs of construction in these communities and these buildings provide critical additional infrastructure.”…

A series of new intergovernmental service agreements will help Naval Submarine Base New London, Connecticut by sharing services with the state of Connecticut, the Capitol Region Council of Governments and Groton Utilities. Projects include fence and gate repairs, lead abatement, bulk purchases, water infrastructure maintenance, and stormwater improvements, as The Day reported. “When Captain [Kenneth] Curtin no longer has to worry about that stormwater system on Route 12 on the east side of his base, he can focus on the west side of his base, deploying combat-ready submarines,” Connecticut Office of Military Affairs Executive Director Bob Ross said. “We can take some things off of his plate so he can focus on the more important things.”
