Senate Report Says Military Families Still Dealing with Mold, Leaks in Housing

April 26, 2022

An eight-month Senate investigation says poor housing conditions have persisted at sites managed by Balfour Beatty Communities, even after the company pleaded guilty in December to fraud against the government for subpar housing conditions from 2013 to 2019.

Senate investigators “found that Balfour’s practices since 2019 at the bases it examined mirror Balfour’s practices between 2013 and 2019 that led to its December 2021 guilty plea for fraud,” the report states, as Military Times reported. The report specifically looked into housing conditions at Fort Gorgon, Georgia and Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas.

A company spokesperson said the company does not agree that the problems have continued.

“The company has put in place rigorous new compliance and assurance procedures to prevent such behavior,” a Balfour Beatty spokesperson told Military Times. “In addition, it has implemented strict mold control procedures, and has devoted a great deal of time, effort and money to ensure that work orders are promptly entered into [the electronic maintenance work order system].”

Balfour Beatty officials, service members, a military spouse and a military family housing advocate will testify at a Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing Tuesday at 10 a.m. Eastern time.
