Air Force Pauses Some Moves, Bonuses Because of Personnel Budget Shortfall

July 11, 2023

The Air Force is pausing some PCS moves and payment bonuses, because high personnel costs have stretched its budget, the service said in a Monday statement.

“Due to inflation, [moving] costs were higher than budgeted, and we made investments in recruiting and retention bonuses to address recruiting challenges and enhance retention,” Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said, according to Stars and Stripes. “The Air Force is still working through actual costs and potential funding options at this time. These delays do not impact airmen who already have orders in hand.”

The Air Force has approved PCS orders with projected July departure dates. Airmen awaiting departure dates in August or later may be delayed.

The Air Force is suspending the selective reenlistment bonus program, but some airmen may be eligible for the bonus in the next fiscal year. It is also delaying new assignment incentive pay for those who aren’t already receiving AIP pay.
