In Push for More Ukraine Support, McConnell Makes Case for Defense Manufacturing Communities

September 8, 2023

Some senior Senate Republicans are joining their Democratic colleagues and the White House in pressing House Republicans to back additional spending to support Ukraine in its war against Russia.

“The money we’re talking about doesn’t go to Ukraine,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on the Senate floor Thursday, according to CQ. “It goes to defense manufacturing facilities all across America and supports tens of thousands of American jobs.”

The Ukraine funding is emerging as a major obstacle as lawmakers try to reach agreement on a stopgap spending bill to keep the government open past the end of the month. It is unclear how a shutdown would immediately impact the military, including service member pay, as Military Times reported.

Budget talks will resume when the House returns to session next week.
