Texas to Build Military Base Camp at Mexico Border

February 21, 2024

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) announced plans to build a forward operating base in Eagle Pass, the border town at the center of Abbott’s showdown with the federal government, as ABC News reported.

“It will amass a large army in a very strategic area,” Abbott said. “It will increase the speed and flexibility of the Texas National Guard to be able to respond to crossings.”

The state said it expects to have 300 beds at the facility by mid-April. The plan is to ultimately house 2,300 Guard members.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has joined other Republican governors in committing to send National Guard members to the area, The Hill reported. “The border is a warzone, so we’re sending soldiers,” Noem wrote in an X post.
