Duke Energy to Provide Solar Power for Five Carolina Bases

June 21, 2024

The Pentagon this week announced a “first-of-its-kind partnership” with Duke Energy to power five installations in North and South Carolina with solar electricity through 2041.

The $248 million procurement will provide carbon-free electricity to Fort Liberty, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said during a press briefing.

DOD and Duke Energy announced the deal Tuesday at Fort Liberty.

“This is a significant step forward,” Brendan Owens, assistant defense secretary for energy, installations and environment and DOD’s chief sustainability officer, said, according to an Army story. “By supporting the construction of new clean, renewable energy, we are enhancing our resilience to support the warfighter and DOD’s mission.”
