HUD Eases Catch-22 Burden in Program for Unhoused Vets

August 15, 2024

The departments of Housing and Urban Development and Veterans Affairs are making changes to the Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program, according to a press release. The program provides rental assistance to veterans experiencing homelessness, but until now, the vouchers counted as income, meaning some unhoused veterans were priced out of affordable housing opportunities.

“No veteran should ever have to experience homelessness, but when they do, they should not face barriers to getting help they deserve,” HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman said.

“The days of a veteran having to choose between getting the VA benefits they deserve and the housing support they need are finally over,” VA Secretary Denis McDonough said. “This is a critical step forward that will help veterans nationwide – and bring us one step closer to our ultimate goal of putting an end to veteran homelessness for good.”
