Congress Close to Fixing VA Shortfall that Could Affect Benefits Checks

September 13, 2024

Veterans advocates are optimistic lawmakers will agree to fix a $3 billion shortfall in the Department of Veterans Affairs budget for the current fiscal year, Military Times reported.

VA officials have said without a patch in place by next week, benefits checks may be delayed in October. The shortfall is because of an increased number of medical care and benefits claims.

Military Times reported the House may consider legislation next week to cover the funding gap.

“Every day that we get closer to September 20 is another 24 hours of uncertainty for thousands of veterans whose financial lives depend on this,” American Legion Legislative Director Julia Mathis said at a rally with other veterans advocates.
