Congress Funds Government at Current Level, Heads Home

September 26, 2024

The House and Senate Wednesday passed a 12-week continuing resolution to keep government spending at its current level through December 20, lawmakers’ last big action before leaving town for campaign season.

“Americans can breathe easy that because both sides have chosen bipartisanship, Congress is getting the job done,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday on the Senate floor.

President Biden is expected to sign the bill before the fiscal year ends Monday night, when the federal government would have shut down without yesterday’s congressional action.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told his GOP colleagues he will work to pass all 12 individual spending bills by the end of the year instead of moving a massive omnibus bill or even “minibus” packages that combine several spending bills.
