PFAS Spill in New Mexico
Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico is evaluating the economic impact of 7,000 gallons of PFAS-contaminated water spilled at the base’s fire training center in July, as Military.com reported. “We understand the concerns of our community, our airmen, and their families,” Col. Robert Johnston, the base commander, said. “Please know that we are working expeditiously to address the affected area. We are committed to taking all necessary steps to ensure such incidents do not happen again in the future.”
Navy’s Maryland Energy Project Faces Backlash
The Navy’s plans to install renewable energy solutions at the former Naval Academy Dairy Farm in Gambrills, Maryland have been met with community backlash, Military.com reported. The current plan of converting the former site into 857 acres of solar panels is opposed by some who feel it will force out the small amount of farmland remaining in the state.
Community Rallies to Help Marine Recruit Get to Boot Camp
Alexander Williams, an Atlanta-area 18-year-old was scheduled to report to Parris Island, South Carolina for Marine Corps boot camp after his local community rallied to get him there, including by helping him finish his GED testing just days before he shipped out, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. “Here’s a kid who hasn’t started yet. Where could he go? He could be the next sergeant major of the Marine Corps,” said Jim Lindenmeyer, executive director of the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Project and one of the community leaders who helped Williams.
