Hawaii Base Partners with Local Science Center to Research Turtles
A Navy story recently covered the work between Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Hawaii and the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center to research the region’s endangered sea turtles. The preliminary results from the study, which began in January this year and included applying satellite tracking devices on the turtles, have already shown that a viral disease may be caused by proximity to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The Navy hopes this partnership will allow it to take better care of the base’s local environment.
