Lawmakers don’t return to D.C. until next week, but discussions are already happening about how to fund the government when the current fiscal year ends in less than a month.
Punchbowl News reported Monday that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) will propose a continuing resolution that extends into March 2025 and wants to pair it with the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship when registering to vote.
“The speaker is getting pressure from hardline conservatives and former President Donald Trump to attach the SAVE Act to the CR even if it threatens a shutdown,” Punchbowl reported.
The House’s topline spending figures and policy riders will not fly in the Senate, so this is kicking off a tumultuous few weeks as lawmakers try to avert an election season government shutdown.
