Lawmakers Propose Tax Incentives to Build Housing Near Bases

September 24, 2024

A newly introduced House bill would offer tax incentives to developers who build low-income housing within 15 miles of major installations, Military.com reported. Reps. Blake Moore (R-Utah) and Marilyn Strickland (D-Wash.) introduced the Low Income Housing for Defense Communities Act of 2024 last week.

“Servicemembers and their families should be able to afford to live where they are stationed,” Strickland said in a press release. “This is important for their quality of life and affects readiness.”

Moore said the idea came from Mark Shepherd, mayor of Clearfield, Utah, near Hill Air Force Base.

“This bill will spur development interest for Low-Income Housing Tax Credit construction near large installations like [Hill],” Moore said.
