Navy Apologizes for 1869 Bombardment of Alaska Native Village
Rear Adm. Mark Sucato, commander, Navy Region Northwest, delivered an apology to the Alaska Native village of Kake on behalf of the Navy, The Hill reported. Navy officials apologized for the bombardment of the village 155 years ago. “This has been 155 years in the making,” said Joel Jackson, the president of the Organized Village of Kake. “It’s becoming real because we never talked about it, and now we are.” The event was the first of two apologies to Alaskan Native communities to come this year, with the next being to Angoon in mid-October. The Pentagon has begun reevaluations of the medals of freedom given out during the massacre.
