Pentagon: ‘Few Thousand’ More Troops Headed to Middle East

October 1, 2024

The Pentagon said Monday it will send a “few thousand” more U.S. service members to the Middle East as war tensions rise there. The new deployments will mean about 43,000 service members are in the region, AP reported.

Over the weekend, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln to stay in the region, as USNI reported. The Harry S. Truman carrier strike group is already on its way to the Middle East.

“Secretary Austin and department leaders remain focused on the protection of U.S. citizens and forces in the region, the defense of Israel and the de-escalation of the situation through deterrence and diplomacy,” Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said Monday.

Singh said that some of the augmented forces being sent to the region include F-16, F-15E and F-22 fighter aircraft, as well as A-10 attack aircraft and associated personnel, according to a DOD story.
