A recently filed bipartisan bill would extend the amount of time the spouses of fallen service members can receive TRICARE coverage in the “active duty family member” category.
The bill was introduced by Reps. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) and Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio).
“We owe so much to those who answered the call to service and perished in defense of our nation and must ensure we take care of their surviving spouses,” Kaptur said in a joint press release.
Under current law, Gold Star spouses remain in the “active duty family member” category for three years after losing their spouse. At that time, they are reclassified to “retired family member” status, costing them more out of pocket.
“We as a nation have a responsibility to these families our heroes leave behind, and this is a small step forward in honoring their sacrifice and caring for their families,” Bacon said.
