More than one-quarter of House and Senate lawmakers signed a letter asking the House and Senate Armed Services committees to give governors the final say over whether to transfer some of their Guard troops to the federal government, as Military.com reported.
The Air Force has proposed moving some Air National Guard units with space missions into Space Force active duty. The National Guard Bureau has said it would likely affect 1,000 personnel across seven states.
“We recognize the urgency of the future threats facing our national security, and we support the Department of the Air Force’s efforts to prepare,” 125 lawmakers wrote last week in a bipartisan, bicameral letter. “We also believe that the desired end can be achieved through dialogue with affected states, without undermining the foundational principles that have guided the National Guard for over a century.”
The lawmakers want National Defense Authorization Act negotiators to keep House-passed language that gives governors the final word in transferring their Guard personnel.
