The nation’s first-ever strategy for harnessing artificial intelligence outlines ways for DOD and other federal agencies to responsibly use emerging AI technology.
“We must outcompete our adversaries,” one official told The Washington Post. “With a lack of policy clarity and legal clarity of what can and can’t be done, we are likely to see less experimentation.”
The strategy memo, released Thursday, is aimed at encouraging AI development by setting those standards and guidelines for “era-defining technology” in national security.
“The United States must lead the world in the responsible application of AI to appropriate national security functions,” the White House memo says. “AI, if used appropriately and for its intended purpose, can offer great benefits. If misused, AI could threaten United States national security, bolster authoritarianism worldwide, undermine democratic institutions and processes, facilitate human rights abuses, and weaken the rules-based international order.”
