Air Force Deployment Plans May Leave Bases Understaffed, GAO Says

December 3, 2024

Changes in how the Air Force organizes, deploys and trains forces may mean there aren’t enough airmen to fully staff some installations, the Government Accountability Office said last week in a new report.

“For example, the Air Force plans to eventually deploy an entire wing from an airbase rather than individuals from multiple wings and airbases,” according to the report summary. “But it hasn’t assessed whether bases will have enough staff to operate when units deploy—to fill jobs like guarding entrances or providing security. Also, it hasn’t set timeframes for its efforts.”

The report recommends that the Air Force complete an assessment of minimum U.S. base personnel needs. It also says the Air Force acknowledged that it implemented the changes quickly to prepare for potential global threats.
