California Base Awarded $42 Million for Long-Duration Energy Storage
Camp Pendleton, California was recently awarded a $42 million dollar grant from the California Energy Commission that will go toward constructing a long-duration battery storage facility, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. Planned to be completed by summer 2027, the system will provide redundancy and stability for the local power grid and will use zinc-based batteries aimed at limiting the risk of fire. “These projects are more than just an investment; they’re a shared commitment to a stronger, cleaner future,” said Meredith Berger, assistant secretary of the Navy for energy, installations and environment.
Michigan Base Greenlit as Center for Northern Border Security
In a draft of defense policy recently released, Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan was designated as the formal Northern Border Mission Center, according to The Detroit News. Funding for the plan has already been secured, as $3 million was designated for the project in a spending bill adopted this year. The center will stay there through 2027 and provide a place to monitor the two most often used Northern border crossings.
