The House-Senate compromise version of the National Defense Authorization Act making its way through Congress this week would move 578 Air National Guard members to the active Space Force, as Military.com reported.
Governors from all 50 states and five territories have been against the move since it was first discussed earlier this year, saying it overrides their authority over the Guard.
“The decision undermines more than 100 years of precedent, as well as national security and military readiness,” the National Governors Association said in a statement this week.
The bill would move 33 airmen from Alaska, 126 from California, 119 from Colorado, 75 from Florida, 130 from Hawaii, 69 from Ohio and 26 from the Air National Guard headquarters.
