Federal Spending Freeze on Hold; Potential Impact Unclear

January 29, 2025

A federal judge has put a temporary hold on a White House order that abruptly called for freezing much federal spending, as Politico reported.

The Office of Management and Budget issued its order late Monday instructing all federal agencies to freeze grants and loan payments. The broad language created chaos in Washington and across the country. Throughout Tuesday, the White House tried to clarify that the freeze wouldn’t affect programs like Medicare, Social Security and SNAP.

But it’s still unclear how the freeze would affect many other federal programs, including veterans medical research, caregiver support, and state-managed veterans nursing homes and veterans cemeteries, as Military.com reported.
