Hegseth Nomination Clears Senate Procedural Vote

January 24, 2025

The Senate progressed Pete Hegseth’s nomination for secretary of defense in a Thursday afternoon procedural vote. By a 51-49 vote, the Senate ended debate on his confirmation, setting up a potential Friday vote to finalize his confirmation.

Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) joined all Democrats in opposing the advancement of his nomination.

“After thorough evaluation, I must conclude that I cannot in good conscience support his nomination for Secretary of Defense,” Murkowski wrote in an X post soon before the vote.
