Fort Moore to Become Fort Benning Again

March 4, 2025

Fort Moore, Georgia will be renamed again as Fort Benning, DOD said Monday in a press release.

The base, originally named for Confederate general Henry Benning, was among nine bases with Confederate-linked names to be redesignated in recent years. In 2023, it became Fort Moore, honoring celebrated Vietnam veteran Hal Moore and his wife Julia, who advocated for changes in how families are notified of casualties, as Military.com noted.

Now, Fort Benning will honor Corporal Fred G. Benning, a World War I veteran, according to a memo by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

In February, Hegseth changed Fort Liberty, North Carolina back to Fort Bragg in honor of World War II veteran Pfc. Roland Bragg, instead of Braxton Bragg, the Confederate general it was one named after.

The Pentagon will determine a timeline for making the changes.
