Report: DOD to Cut Tens of Thousands of Civilian Jobs

March 19, 2025

Pentagon officials said today that DOD will reduce its civilian workforce by 5% to 8%, AP reported. That amounts to dropping 45,000 to 72,000 positions.

An official told AP that DOD will achieve the cuts three ways: terminating probationary employees, not filling positions when people leave and fulfilling the offer of voluntary buyouts. About 21,000 DOD civilians have requested and been approved for the buyout.

The overall cuts could include thousands of veterans, who make up about 46% of DOD’s civilian workforce.
