Maxwell AFB Begins Repairs After Weather Damage

After facing strong winds and cold earlier this month, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama has begun repairs to dormitories and a training facility. The damage included the bursting of sprinkler system pipes due to the cold.

By utilizing community partnerships, the base has been able to quickly gain access to materials from local venders and hopes to complete construction in six weeks, according to TORCH.

Guam Faces Housing Challenges Amid Price Hikes

Due to the mechanics of housing reimbursement plans for military members living off-base, housing prices in Guam have begun unsustainably rising. The Oversea Housing Alliance plan, which members living on Guam have access to, incentivizes paying for the most valuable property to maximize the payment because the system has a fixed percentage of value that is paid out, The Guam Daily Post reported.

Housing developers are artificially increasing housing prices to take advantage of this relationship, as military members make up a third of occupants on the island, the article said. As the military presence is expected to grow by another 10,000 in the coming years, DOD officials are working on plans to create new on-base housing to provide for members, according to Kuam News.
