Government Liable for Illnesses Near Red Hill Leak, Court Rules

May 9, 2025

A federal judge ruled Thursday that the Navy was liable for the 2021 leak at the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility near Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii.

The court awarded 17 sickened military family members compensation for pain and suffering, ranging from $3,000 to $45,000, Hawaii News Now reported.

“Our military family and civilian clients affected by the Red Hill contamination catastrophe have prevailed against all odds against the U.S. government, which was finally forced to concede its liability,” Just Well Law said in a statement. The firm helped the families with their lawsuit.

The Navy is working to decommission the facility.
