California Navy School Reopens After Earthquakes with OLDCC Grant

A DOD press release recently covered the reopening of Richmond Elementary School at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, California. The school suffered severe earthquake damage in 2019. With a $78 million grant from the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation’s Public Schools on Military Installations program, officials were able to repair it with state-of-the-art infrastructure. The school will serve more than 500 students in the 55,000 square-foot facility.

Nonprofit Launches Childcare ‘Helper’ Program

The nonprofit Operation Child Care Project is working to provide military families with trained “helpers,” who can jump in and assist them with everyday tasks, KOAA reported. These helpers fill the role that extended family members or neighbors would usually occupy, making up for the frequent moves that service members often have to make. The program will pilot in Colorado Springs this summer.
