DOD awarded OpenAI – the company behind ChatGPT a $200 million contract to “develop prototype frontier AI capabilities to address critical national security challenges in both warfighting and enterprise domains,” the department said in a Monday announcement.
The contract runs through July 2026.
“This award is another step on our journey toward accelerating the adoption of advanced AI,” a DOD official told Breaking Defense. “In the coming weeks, we will announce partnerships with other frontier AI companies as well.”

The evolution of AI in warfighting, operations and other areas will be a topic at ADC’s upcoming Installation Innovation Forum Oct. 27-29 in Monterey, California. The event is expected to bring together more than 1,000 leaders from DOD, the military services, communities and industry.
