Kansas Air Force Base Protects Riverbank Against Erosion
McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas has partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on stream bank revetment at the southern tip of the base, according to an Air Force story. The roots of newly planted redwood trees strengthen the bank against erosion and help collect soil in its roots, growing the shore and improving the ecosystem in the water.
Former New York Base Needs Funding to Limit Sinkholes
The site of the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base, New York, has seen multiple sinkholes appear on nearby public roads after severe weather. Because of a Cold War-era storm drain that sits 26 feet under the road, storms have caused sinkholes that can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to NCPR. City officials are calling for federal funding to permanently fix the issue, which would take a special device to dig deep enough to remove the storm drain.
