Trump Signs Megabill with DOD Budget Boost, Cuts to Taxes and Safety Net Programs

July 7, 2025

President Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act over the weekend. The bill includes $150 billion in defense spending, along with most of Trump’s domestic spending priorities such as extended tax cuts and cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs.

“The One Big Beautiful Bill will deliver the strongest border on Earth, the strongest economy on Earth, the strongest military on Earth, & ensure the United States of America will remain the strongest country anywhere on this beautiful planet of ours,” Trump said in a White House social media post.

The administration’s official defense spending request for fiscal year 2026 is $848 billion, essentially the same as the current year’s budget. The administration has been counting on the megabill defense money to supplement the budget request, getting the total amount close to the trillion dollar military budget President Trump promised.
