DHS Asks Chicago-Area Base for Immigration Support

August 29, 2025

The Department of Homeland Security has asked Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois for “limited support in the form of facilities, infrastructure, and other logistical needs to support DHS operations,” a base spokesperson said, according to AP.

The base is about 35 miles outside Chicago, fueling further speculation that the Trump administration is planning to send federal agents into the city following National Guard deployments to Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, both Democrats, have discouraged President Trump from sending troops to Chicago.

“We will not stand idly by if he decides to send the National Guard to intimidate Chicagoans,” Pritzker wrote Wednesday on X. “Action will be met with a response.”
