NDAA Amendment Would Rename DOD

August 28, 2025

Among the hundreds of amendments filed for the fiscal year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act is one that would rename the Department of Defense the Department of War. It has been introduced by Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.).

“Restoring the Department of War name to our military will not only honor the heroism of the service members who came before us but also remind each new generation of their sacred responsibility to defend freedom,” Steube told Military.com.

President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said again this week that they want to make the change, as On Base reported. Trump said he isn’t sure Congress needs to sign off on the plan.

Steube’s amendment would also change Hegseth’s title to Secretary of War.

The Rules Committee will decide which amendments get a vote on the floor when the House considers the NDAA the week of Sept. 8.
