The Senate Appropriations Committee overwhelmingly approved a spending bill that would provide $852 billion in defense funding in fiscal year 2026, as Military Times reported.
“This bill addresses major funding gaps across the board,” Appropriations Committee Chair Susan Collins (R-Maine) said.
The spending level is about $20 billion above what House appropriators have proposed and what the administration requested. The White House has requested roughly flat-level defense spending, pared with $150 billion that was included in the One Big Beautiful Bill.
“I think not only the prior administration, but this administration as well, have underestimated the level of challenge that we have in defense,” said Sen. Mitch McConnell, (R-Ky.), who chairs the defense appropriations subcommittee.
The bill includes a 3.8% pay raise for service members, which House lawmakers also included in their version of the spending bill. The raise would go into effect in January.
