President Trump said he plans to send National Guard troops to Memphis, backing away from plans to send Guardsmen to Chicago next, AP reported.
Memphis Mayor Paul Young disputed Trump’s claims that he was “happy” about the planned deployment.
“I did not ask for the National Guard, and I don’t think it’s the way to drive down crime,” Young told reporters Friday, according to ABC 24. “However, that decision has been made.”
Republican Gov. Bill Lee said he has been coordinating with the White House on what role the Guard can play.
“I’m grateful for the President’s unwavering support and commitment to providing every resource necessary to serve Memphians,” Lee said in a statement. “Memphis remains on a path to greatness, and we are not going to let anything hold them back.”
