Trump Signs Order Sending Guard to Memphis with Other Cities to Follow

September 16, 2025

President Trump Monday established the Memphis Safe Task Force, which will include a National Guard deployment to the city, as The Hill reported.

“This task force will be a replica of our extraordinary successful efforts [in Washington, D.C.], and you’ll see it’s a lot of the same thing,” Trump said in the Oval Office alongside Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) and the state’s two Republican senators.

Lee requested the deployment. “When we come together, we can make significant change in our city and the city of Memphis… and I want to say thank you,” Lee told Trump.

The presidential memo calls for cooperation between federal and local officials. The White House said it will send the military to other U.S. cities as well. Trump specifically mentioned “going into Chicago next,” followed by St. Louis and New Orleans.
