U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll recently announced plans to increase drone production and field 1 million drones in the next two to three years. Through the new “SkyFoundry” program, the Army would both partner with private industry and increase internal production, Defense News reported. 

The effort will set up “a supply chain that is robust enough and deep enough that we could activate to manufacture however many drones we would need,” Driscoll told Reuters. 

Driscoll also said that part of the effort will be reframing drones as expendable resources similar to ammunition, rather than pieces of permanent infrastructure.
