A bill introduced in the House would increase benefits to veterans and surviving family, Military Times reported. The Sharri Briley and Eric Edmundson Veterans Benefits Expansion Act would be the first non-inflation-related increase in compensation since 1993.
“This bill is something that is long overdue and something we are going to continue to work on. Families like yours get left behind,” bill sponsor Rep. Tom Barrett (R-Mich.) said. “This bill represents a shift, trying to do something that’s never been done.”
To pay for the increase, which would cost $7 billion, House Republicans proposed adding a fee to the VA mortgage program for second home loans.
