The Trump administration recently announced that the National Guard will be mobilized to New Orleans. Similar to recent deployments to D.C., Chicago and other cities across the country, the stated goal is to fight crime, Military Times reported.
Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry (R) asked for up to 1,000 troops back in September and won’t be opposing their intervention. But incoming Democratic mayor-elect of New Orleans, Helena Moreno, has firmly rejected the idea of National Guard deployment alongside Rep. Troy Carter (D), who represents the city in the House, meaning there will still likely be legal challenges similar to other National Guard deployments, AP News reported.
The deployment will coincide with the ICE immigration crackdown that is expected to begin this week, dubbed the “Swamp Sweep.”
